Where Were You in 2002?

All during the night I could not stop thinking about this little girl. Please take a look at her picture. See her sad eyes and that hopeless expression. This is what you need to know about this little girl...

Her name is Kolina, and she has down syndrome. She is NINE YEARS OLD! You would never believe that from looking at her little picture, but, yes, it is a relatively current picture. She is tiny and lives in an orphanage in Bulgaria where many of the children are malnourished and receive very minimal care. This is the same orphanage where 5-year old Lina is at right now, and this is also the same place where a little girl named Katie that I have mentioned before on this blog spent 9 years of her life also. Katie's mom has an amazing blog where she tells about their adoption of Katie and described what life is like in this orphanage for these tiny and hopeless little ones. You can see her story here. Not long ago, she described how the children are fed...

"You may remember reading that she was fed using a heavy glass beer bottle with a long teat stretched over the top with a huge hole cut in the end.  She was fed flat on her back, and the bottle contents were poured down her throat in a matter of a few minutes, forcing her to gulp rapidly to keep up with it.  She did not close her lips around the nipple or lift her hands to the bottle, and she often did not finish her bottles.  Her belly was constantly grossly distended due to both the food and the feeding method.

This method of feeding is actually a current endangerment to the lives of any of the other children in her former orphanage who are still being fed in this way, due to the risk of choking, vomiting, aspirating, and asphyxiation.  This is only one of the reasons we are praying that God will preserve the lives of the little ones whose families are still months away from getting them."

Here's what was happening in 2002...
  • In 2002, George Bush was in his 2nd year as our president.
  • The Department of Homeland Security was established.
  • Kelly Clarkson won the first American Idol contest.
  • "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was released.
  • "A Beautiful Mind" won Best Picture
  • Pennsylvania miners were rescued.
  • Beltway snipers were captured.
  • A stamp cost 37 cents.
  • Our national debt was at approximately $6 Trillion. The national debt clock was actually turned off for the first half of the year because the debt had actually been dropping! It is now over $15 Trillion.
  • And...I didn't have any children, yet!
My point is that 2002, the year Kolina was born, seems like such a long time ago. When I think back on my life and remember where I was in 2002 and what I was doing, it feels like such a long time ago. The truth is that 2002 was a long time ago.

Almost 10 years. Almost one decade.

That is how long this little girl has been sitting in that crib in that orphanage. It is unthinkable!

Kolina needs a family desperately. It is a miracle that she is even alive. Yesterday she was listed on Reece's Rainbow and you can check out her profile. Here's what I wish her profile said...

O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me.
Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up;
Thou dost understand my thoughts from afar.
Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down,
and art intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue;
Behold, O Lord, Thou dost know it all.
Thou hast enclosed me behind and before,
and laid Thy hand upon me...
For Thou didst form my inward parts;
Thou didst weave me in my mother's womb.
I will give thanks to Thee
for I am fearfully and wonderfully made...
Psalm 139:1-5, 13-14
