The Oil of Gladness

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,

Because the Lord has anointed me

To bring good news to the afflicted;

He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted,

To proclaim liberty to captives,

And freedom to prisoners;

To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord...

To comfort all who mourn...

Giving them a garland instead of ashes,

The oil of gladness instead of mourning,

The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.

So they will be called oaks of righteousness,

The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified...

Psalm 61:1-3

It's nighttime here in Bulgaria, and I have one worn-out, little girl sleeping here by my side!

But, before this day ends, I want you to know...

HE WAS FAITHFUL, and it has been a good, good day!

I read these verses from Isaiah this morning before leaving for Stara Zagora to get Faith. I thought about them all morning and about 30 minutes after leaving the orphanage with her hand in mine, I began praying them out loud over my newest brown-eyed girl. Up until that point, she had not spoken a word. Her face had been without any expression, and those big eyes of hers were just taking everything in. But when I started speaking those words out loud and speaking the name of Jesus over her little life, I tell you the honest truth, she started smiling. Not only smiling, she started giggling, and then cackling, for no apparent reason. Or, rather, for one very obvious reason - He was right there with us, right by our side! A faithful Father who had not once, not even for one millisecond, left this precious one's side. Every moment of her life, He has been with her, but in this moment, it was so tangible! He poured out the oil of gladness on this frightened and confused little girl and filled her heart with a sense of joy and delight that could only come from Him! It was an incredible moment watching my daughter burst out into laughter! Praise to the One who sets the lonely in families!!!

She did great the remainder of the trip, a trip that included a flat tire {and hanging out in a hot car while it got changed} and a visit to a crowded police station to get her passport photo taken. When we finally got back to our hotel, she was hot, hungry, and very overwhelmed! We spent the rest of the afternoon and evening playing with toys and even doing a little bit of FaceTime with Will and the kids! We did have a hard time with mealtime as I struggled to find something that she would eat. It appears that she had much of the same difficulty that S had {and still continue to have} chewing and swallowing, but I'm very thankful that she readily drank a big cup of milk and ate a little bit of yogurt and applesauce. She tolerated a bath and fell asleep within 30 minutes of me putting her to bed! I am amazed at how well she has done. It was a long day...

I'm pretty exhausted, too! :) But, He never left my side today, either! Not for one moment did I feel alone! He, quite literally, has strengthened my arms and my legs to be able to physically carry and care for this beautiful girl of mine. {Toting her around is a full-body workout!!!} I also know that He has been preparing my heart all along to be her momma! Tonight I am praying for the wisdom and patience that I need to help her adjust to a completely new and different reality than she has ever known, and also that I will know how to show her love in a way that she can comprehend!

I know without a doubt that He is my ever-present help, and tonight my heart is filled with hope, joy, and expectation as I look forward to what a new day will bring! New mercies, I am sure! :)

I also know without a doubt that your prayers have made a difference! Thank you, faithful friends, for your encouragement!!!!
